1975 Wilkes 400

The 1975 Wilkes 400 was held on September 21 at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina. The 0.625-mile short track hosted the 400-lap (250-mile) NASCAR Winston Cup event with a 30-car field and an attendance of 9,800.

Richard Petty won the pole in his No. 43 Dodge with a qualifying speed of 105.500 mph. Cale Yarborough led a race-high 177 laps and built nearly a full-lap advantage over Petty. However, a late pit stop with under 100 laps remaining changed the outcome. A pit miscue cost Yarborough valuable time, allowing Petty to close in.

Petty would win by 2.4 seconds over Yarborough, earning $9,960 for the victory—his 11th win of the season and part of a sweep at the track that year. The race saw seven cautions for 34 laps and finished at an average speed of 88.966 mph. Darrell Waltrip finished third, Buddy Baker fourth, and Lennie Pond fifth.
