The race was run at a fast pace with only two caution periods totaling 27 laps. Yarborough led 214 laps despite losing laps due to a black flag and ignition troubles. On lap 410, Yarborough overcame the issues and moved into the lead lap, 26 seconds behind Richard Petty. Yarborough steadily gained ground and made the winning pass on lap 480, finishing the race 7.2 seconds ahead of Petty. David Pearson, Bobby Allison, and Buddy Baker would round out the top five finishers.
The victory paid $18,075 to Yarborough and was the 38th win of his NASCAR Cup career. His average speed for the race was 115.740 mph. Following the race, Yarborough held a 54-point lead over Richard Petty in the NASCAR Winston Cup standings.
