1976 Mason-Dixon 500

The 1976 Mason-Dixon 500 was a 500-lap NASCAR Winston Cup Series race held on May 16th at Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware. A crowd of 32,800 fans watched 39 cars compete on the one-mile concrete oval.

Dave Marcis won the pole position in the #71 K&K Insurance Dodge. The race was slowed by six cautions for 38 laps. Benny Parsons, driving the #72 L.G. DeWitt Chevrolet, led 176 laps and went on to win by a comfortable 25.5 seconds over David Pearson with an average speed of 115.436 mph. Dave Marcis finished third, followed by Bobby Allison in fourth and Buddy Baker in fifth. Parsons earned $18,890 for the victory — his first win of the 1976 season.

This strong performance allowed Benny Parsons to take over the points lead, leaving Dover with a 24-point advantage over Cale Yarborough.
