1977 Virginia 500

The 1977 Virginia 500, the ninth race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, was held at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia. The event was scheduled for 500 laps on the 0.526-mile short track, covering about 263 miles, but heavy rain forced officials to stop it after 384 laps. Cale Yarborough, driving the #11 Chevrolet for Junior Johnson & Associates, dominated from his fifth starting position, leading 243 laps enroute to victory. This marked Yarborough’s fifth win in the first nine races of the season, further strengthening his grip on the points standings and contributing to his eventual second consecutive championship. Attendance was reported at 32,000, and the race featured typical tight Martinsville competition without major additional incidents beyond the weather interruption. Pole-sitter Neil Bonnett in the #71 Dodge led the first lap but finished 12th. Benny Parsons took second in the #72 Chevrolet (also completing 384 laps), followed by Richard Petty in third in the #43 Dodge (381 laps, three down), Lennie Pond in fourth in the #54 Chevrolet (381 laps), and David Pearson in fifth in the #21 Mercury (380 laps, four down).
