1978 Daytona 500

On February 19, 1978, the Daytona 500 drew a record crowd of 140,000 to Daytona International Speedway for a 41-car field. Cale Yarborough captured the pole with a qualifying speed of 187.536 mph, while A.J. Foyt and Darrell Waltrip won the twin qualifying races.

Bobby Allison, starting 33rd in the #15 Bud Moore Ford, charged through the field to score the victory by 33.2 seconds over polesitter Cale Yarborough. Benny Parsons finished third, followed by Ron Hutcherson and Dick Brooks. Allison collected $56,300 for the win—his 48th career Grand National/Winston Cup victory—and ended a 67-race winless streak that had stretched back to 1975. He averaged 159.730 mph in a race slowed by five cautions for 24 laps.
