1978 Los Angeles Times 500

On November 19, 1978, the Los Angeles Times 500 was held at Ontario Motor Speedway as the final race of the 30-race NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. The race drew an attendance of 50,905 for a 40-car field contesting 200 laps on the 2.5-mile track.

Cale Yarborough captured the pole with a qualifying speed of 156.190 mph in the #11 1st National City Travelers Checks Oldsmobile for Junior Johnson & Associates. Bobby Allison, starting second in the #15 Norris Industries Ford for Bud Moore Engineering, scored the victory by 1.7 seconds over Yarborough. Donnie Allison finished third, followed by Buddy Baker and Darrell Waltrip. Bobby Allison collected $24,025 for the win—his fifth of the season—and led a race-high 134 laps. He averaged 137.783 mph in a race that featured 30 lead changes and was slowed by four cautions for 17 laps.
