The 1978 Texas Grand Prix was a 100-lap (200-mile) USAC Championship Car race held on the high-banked 2-mile paved oval at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas, on August 6, 1978. It was the 11th race of the 18-race season, which was the final full year before the CART/USAC split.
A.J. Foyt, driving his #14 Gilmore/Citicorp Coyote-Foyt, won the race. Tom Sneva started on pole with a speed of 210.773 mph. Foyt took the lead from Gordon Johncock on lap 74, led a total of 50 laps, and held on to victory with an average race speed of 159.06 mph. There were nine lead changes among the drivers and three cautions that slowed the race for 16 laps.
21 cars started the event. Wally Dallenbach finished fourth and Tom Sneva rounded out the top five. This win was another strong performance for Foyt on his favorite high-speed oval during the competitive 1978 season.
