1979 Holly Farms 400

The 1979 Holly Farms 400 was held on October 14 at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina after being postponed two weeks earlier due to heavy rain and an unusual infestation of worms that covered the track. The 0.625-mile short track hosted the 400-lap (250-mile) NASCAR Winston Cup event with a 29-car field and an attendance of 18,000.

Dale Earnhardt won the pole in his No. 2 Rod Osterlund Chevrolet with a qualifying speed of 112.783 mph. Benny Parsons, driving the No. 27 M.C. Anderson Chevrolet, won a close battle by half a car length over Bobby Allison. It was the first victory for car owner M.C. Anderson and Parsons’ 13th career win. Richard Petty finished third, Dale Earnhardt fourth, and Ricky Rudd fifth.

The race saw nine cautions for 48 laps and finished at an average speed of 91.454 mph. Parsons earned $12,225 for the victory. Petty’s third-place finish moved him to within 17 points of points leader Darrell Waltrip. Waltrip finished 13th after an on-track accident with Bobby Allison cost him over 20 laps in the pits making repairs.
