1979 NAPA National 500

The 1979 NAPA National 500 was held on October 7 at Charlotte Motor Speedway before an estimated 90,000 fans as the 27th race of the NASCAR Winston Cup season. A 40-car field contested 334 laps on the 1.5-mile track. Neil Bonnett won the pole with a speed of 164.304 mph, marking the 13th consecutive Charlotte pole for the Wood Brothers.

Cale Yarborough started fourth in the #11 Junior Johnson Chevrolet, led 58 laps, and won by a full lap over Bobby Allison, with Darrell Waltrip third, Richard Petty fourth, and Donnie Allison fifth. Yarborough averaged 134.266 mph through eight cautions for 40 laps in a race that featured 28 lead changes. Waltrip gained five points on Petty in the race to increase his championship lead to 53 points.
