1979 Northwestern Bank 400

On March 25, 1979, North Wilkesboro Speedway hosted the Northwestern Bank 400, a 400-lap showdown on the famous .625-mile short track before 17,500 fans. Benny Parsons won the pole for the 30-car field with a speed of 108.136 mph, but race day belonged to Bobby Allison. The event featured four caution flags for 32 laps, keeping the field tight and setting up a tense finish on the narrow North Carolina oval.

As the laps wound down, Allison surged to the front and controlled the final 47 laps, holding off Richard Petty in the closing stages. Allison crossed the finish line 3.5 seconds ahead of Petty for a hard-fought victory. Parsons backed up his pole run with a strong third-place finish, while rising star Dale Earnhardt came home fourth and Darrell Waltrip finished fifth.
