The 1979 USAC LubriLon Grand Prix was a 100-lap (200-mile) Championship Car race held on the high-banked 2-mile paved oval at Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas, on July 29, 1979. It was the sixth race of the shortened 1979 USAC season, which was running with much smaller fields due to the ongoing CART/USAC split that had divided American open-wheel racing.
A.J. Foyt, driving his #14 Gilmore Coyote-Foyt, started on the pole and led 68 laps to win the race. He took the lead from Tom Bigelow on lap 71 and the two drivers were the only cars left on the lead lap at the finish. Foyt won with an average speed of 162.934 mph, earning $14,040 from a total purse of $67,700. The race had two cautions for 9 laps total.
Only 16 cars started the event. Tom Bigelow finished second, followed by Sheldon Kinser, Roger McCluskey, and Gary Bettenhausen. This victory continued A.J. Foyt’s strong 1979 campaign that helped him secure the USAC National Championship.
