On July 4, 1923, the Kansas City Speedway in Missouri hosted a major AAA National Championship race on its 1.25‑mile wooden board track. The 250‑mile event was won by Eddie Hearne, who averaged 106.118 mph, demonstrating both speed and endurance on the 35-degree high‑banked oval. Earl Cooper finished second, followed by Harlan Fengler in third, Dave Lewis in fourth, and Frank Elliott in fifth. The Kansas City Speedway, a prominent but short-lived venue, would hold its final race the following year, closing permanently due to bankruptcy and deterioration of the track. The July 4th race of 1923 remains one of the highlights of the track’s brief but notable place in early American auto racing history.
