1950 Daytona Beach & Road Course

The 1950 Daytona Beach & Road Course race was the season opener for the NASCAR Grand National Series, held on February 5, 1950 on the iconic 4.1-mile beach-and-road course in Daytona Beach, Florida. Combining hard-packed sand with paved public roads, the unique layout tested both driver skill and mechanical reliability. A crowd of roughly 9,500 spectators watched as the field battled across 48 laps on the challenging course.

Joe Littlejohn started on the pole for the 41-car field but quickly lost the lead to Red Byron. Harold Kite would take the lead from Byron and drove his Lincoln to a 53 second victory over Byron. Lloyd Moore placed third, followed by Al Gross in fourth and J. C. Van Landingham in fifth.

The race highlighted early NASCAR’s rugged character, where staying power often mattered as much as outright speed. It also reinforced Daytona Beach’s growing prestige long before the construction of the Daytona International Speedway made it the home of the Daytona 500.
