The August 13, 1950 NASCAR Grand National race at Occoneechee Speedway was the tenth event of the 1950 season and one of stock car racing’s early showdowns on the demanding one‑mile dirt oval near Hillsboro, North Carolina. The race drew a strong field of competitors and showcased rising young talent in NASCAR’s championship series, which was still expanding beyond its inaugural 1949 Strictly Stock roots.
Dick Linder earned the pole position, but it was Curtis Turner who grabbed the initial advantage and led the opening 45 laps under green, demonstrating his strength in the early half of the race. On lap 46, Turner suffered a blown tire that forced him to pit and dropped him two laps down, ending his dominant run at the front. After Turner’s mishap, Pee Wee Martin briefly held the lead for 12 laps before Glenn “Fireball” Roberts took over on lap 58 and drove on to score the first victory of his NASCAR Grand National career.
Roberts’ win was a milestone moment, launching the career of a future legend of stock car racing. Curtis Turner recovered to finish second, followed by Dick Linder in third. Bill Rexford came home fourth, and Clyde Minter rounded out the top five. Other notable finishers in the top ten included Gene Austin, Lee Petty, and Herb Thomas.
The Occoneechee race illustrated the unpredictable nature of early NASCAR competition, where mechanical failures and track conditions on rugged dirt ovals often reshaped the running order.
